Our plant fiber papers contain plant parts gathered from backyards, flower gardens, fields, and pastures. Best way to find great paper ingredients is to take a ride on a country road - the possibilities fill the ditches! Once the fiber is gathered, it needs to be cut to a manageable size, cooked to remove impurities, beaten to roughen and hydrate the fibers. At this point you can put it in the vat and pull sheets. Plant fibers need a formation aid to create uniform sheets and one of the best is found in the garden - okra juice! The fruits are sliced, or crushed, placed in an old pantyhose leg and soaked in water, the resulting goo is added to the pulp to 'thicken' the water to allow better sheet formation. Plant fiber paper can be smooth on one side if dried with heat by ironing or using a heated drying box, or you can keep the wild and crazy natural texture by cold pressed drying. Either way, plant fibers make fantastic and interesting paper.
daylily stems provide the golden to tan colors in this glossy, slick, moderately textured paper. I've run this paper through my inkjet and laser printers. Works best when hand-fed into printer.

hybrid lily and daylily stems provide the golden brown to tan hues in this moderately textured paper. Some seeds in these sheets.
prairie grass including seeds - medium brown, textured paper created from grass fiber, a handful of recycled paper for body and grass seeds for interest. These are cold pressed sheets and moderately textured.
native prairie grass fiber, mixed with one-quarter recycled paper pulp to add body, and okra juice as formation aid. This is a fairly dark brown paper that is moderately textured.

pure rose petals - This was a total experiment! I had some petals that had turned brown before I could use them, so I decided nothing would be lost. I used all parts of the flower except the hip bud.
I
experimented with two different methods of drying this paper. Some I used a hot iron to dry and it turned the fresh petals a deep maroon/red (image to the left). Others I let dry in the sun and the petals retained their brighter color (image to the right). These sheets of paper are extremely delicate and would be useful only for projects where they would be completely supported.
